Image licensing
Personal license
The standard purchase. It lets you:
- Print the photograph, at any size, for yourself
- Post it on your own social accounts, crediting the photographer by name
- Use it as a profile picture, wallpaper or in a personal portfolio
It does not let you resell it, license it on, use it to promote a business or product, or supply it to a brand, magazine or agency.
Commercial license
Worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive rights to use the photograph in advertising, editorial, brand social, packaging, print and web. It does not grant exclusivity — the photographer may license the same frame to someone else — and it does not cover use that implies endorsement by anyone visible in the photograph without their separate consent.
What neither license covers
Reselling the file as stock. Training a machine learning model. Removing or obscuring a watermark on a preview. Registering the image as a trademark. Any of these needs a separate written agreement with the photographer.
Credit
Credit is required on a personal license and appreciated on a commercial one. The form is the photographer's name or handle adjacent to the image.
Model rights
A license covers the photographer's copyright only. If a person is identifiable and the use is commercial, obtaining their permission is your responsibility. Where a surfer is tagged on ClipYA, their profile is the fastest route to asking.
Exclusivity and extended terms
Contact the photographer through the platform. Anything beyond these two licenses is negotiated directly between you and them.
